            “Life begins perpetually. . .

Life, forever dying to be born afresh,

forever young and eager,

will presently stand upon this earth as upon a footstool,

and stretch out its realm amidst the stars.”

--H.G. Wells

My novel The Girl Next Door is about Jesse and Samantha, a teen couple struggling with Jesse’s cancer. But like all literature, it addresses a universal theme. The real question behind GND is: How can someone walk around, function and feel safe in a world where at any moment disaster might strike? We have no control.

When I was a teenager I was struck by my inability to guide my own fate. Sure, I could study and be good, but that didn’t guarantee a happy life – or any existence at all. I realized this after my first experience with death, when a classmate’s sister died senselessly. On a dare, she’d climbed a pole to retrieve chuka sticks dangling on a wire. She was electrocuted. Her name was Debbie De Surrey. I knew Debbie; I played with her at a summer recreation program. She was always happy and oh, so vivacious and then – poof! She was gone. How could that happen? Weren’t we immortal? That smiling, beautiful girl lives on in my memory, and she is one of the people I dedicated the book to. So, yes, cancer strikes – but so many other things do, too.  Few people wake up and say, “Today I am going to die.”

I live in New York, and 9/11 made me think about mortality even more. One minute those people were working, drinking coffee. And the many were gone. Life or death was determined by luck, and which floor they were on. How tenuous life is.

In the book, Sam lost her father in 9/11. That’s a result of my experience, peripheral compared to others’ but still life-altering. That day, it was like the world was ending. For thousands of people, it did.

The loss of Sam’s father echoes the theme. His ghost stands in the background, either to prepare her for further grief or simply to say goodbye. I’ll admit the mentions of him were Hamlet-induced, though it is for the reader to decide if Sam’s father truly appears. Real or imagined, it is he who gives Sam this counsel: “Death cannot rob us of the love we give away.”

So how do we cope in a world where the people we love can at any moment be stripped from our lives? I don’t have all the answers, but Sam arrives at her own. All I can hope is that this book provides solace, and provokes thought.

Many readers have resonated with a poem Jesse writes for Sam, so I’ll close with it:

Eternity, evermore

That’s how long your love is for

Angel beside me, saving grace

Sunlight shining on your face

The world, my world is what you are

Guiding me, a shining star

A rainbow reigning over me

Brightening the sky, all I see

Passion and goodness, lover and friend

You hold me when my heart descends

The missing piece to my puzzle

The key to unlock my door

I’ll love you from the heavens

for eternity,

Angela finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime as she helps Sebastian find his father in Area 14. After action and adventure on the way there, the group are thrown into another life and death situation... can Angela find a way out?
Fans of the popular YA dystopia series Blemished will not be disappointed by this thrilling conclusion. It will keep you guessing right up to the very last page.
Trust no one.
Book Excerpt:
Angela woke from a deep sleep, and found Cam’s warm body next to her. It was like being in the Compound again.
The others snored softly, purring against the concrete floor. Like every morning in the cells, the prisoners clanged against the metal bars and cried out in their sleep. A thin strip of light reflected through the prison cell and into Angela’s eyes, the only peek of sunlight through the filthy window high up above their heads.
Her back straightened as the sound of heavy boot-steps drifted around the corner of the jail, and keys jangled. Cam woke and climbed to his feet to put himself between Angela and the cell bars. He appeared immediately alert and on guard. Sebastian and Ginge both stirred in time to see the guards approaching; Sebastian’s eyes ringed with dark circles, and his arms hung loosely at his sides. He seemed like a broken man. Ginge stood tall with her shoulders back. Her breath came quickly through her lungs – her chest moving up and down at a rapid rate.
Vincent Cole followed the guards, and Angela searched his face for any trace of remorse or some modicum of humanity. It was a mask. Edward arrived at his side, with a smirk for the four hostages.
The noise of metal against metal sang out through the cell as the guard thrust the key into the prison lock. Despite trying to remain calm, Angela’s stomach clenched with fear. Whatever happened next she wanted to be attentive and ready for anything, but adrenaline pumped through her body – impeding her ability to think straight. There was something about the mask-like expression and the red rings around Vincent’s eyes that worried her.
Cam’s back squared as the cell opened to let the guards flood in. They raised their batons and approached. Angela knew what he was going to do and she didn’t stop him, even though it was pointless. Why not let him fight? What if he won?
A good punch clipped one of the guards on the chin, and he fell backwards, almost knocking another two to the ground. In return, a guard raised his baton and brought it down on Cam’s arm. He cried out in pain. Angela rushed forwards and felt the short, sharp slap of a guard’s rough hand against her cheek. As she fell hard against the jail railings, Ginge lunged at the guard, but despite some quick dodges – and a punch to the kidneys – they were brought under the control of cuffs.
The guard pushed Angela firmly against the bars; metal pressed to her skin. He slipped the cuffs over her wrists. All the time she maintained eye contact with Vincent Cole. She dared him to watch. She wanted him to see exactly what he’d done to four teenagers. Because it wasn’t like any other morning at all. It was the morning they were going to die.

The first two books in the Blemished series, The Blemished and The Vanished, are now part of the YA bundle run by Storybundle until September 17th!

You can find the bundle here:

Blurbs for the other two books in the series:

The Blemished:

A beautiful world comes at a price...

In a world filled with stunning clones Mina Hart is Blemished. Her genes are worthless and that takes away her rights: her right to an Education, her right to a normal life and her right to have a child.

Mina keeps a dangerous secret which she never thought she could share until she meets Angela on her first day at St Jude's School. But their friendship is soon complicated by Angela’s adoptive brother Daniel. Mina finds herself drawn to his mysterious powers and impulsive nature. Then there is the gorgeous clone Sebastian who Mina is forbidden from even speaking to…

The Blemished is a frightening take on a fractured future where the Genetic Enhancement Ministry have taken control of Britain. It will take you on a ride filled with adventure, romance and rebellion.

The Vanished:

“The Compound bustled with action and anticipation, causing my stomach to do a flip. I stopped in my tracks, realising something, something I hadn't thought of before. We were going to war, and people were going to die.”

The Vanished are the forgotten: those who live beyond law or society. Mina fought for freedom. She fought for a better life – a future. But even a free world can decay.

As Mina begins her new life in the Clans she meets people with surprising knowledge about her power, knowledge that could change everything – even her relationship with Daniel. But as she makes new friends, old friends turn against her in shocking betrayal.

Life in the Compound is tough; there are ways and traditions so strange that Mina begins to suspect foul play at the very heart of her new home. Instead of leaving corruption behind in Area 14, Mina is faced with the rotten core of human nature as a Clan warlord threatens to invade the Compound. The Clans are turning against each other and Mina is stuck in the middle.

The Vanished is the second installment in the Blemished series and follows Mina’s story as she continues to challenge those in power and seek out new dangers. With even more rebellion, romance and betrayal, The Vanished promises to take the reader on a roller-coaster ride of adventure and emotion.

Will freedom fall?

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Release Date: July 1, 2013
Book Description:
When Captain Fomor leads his unit of six angelic warriors to Earth in an attempt to escape the war in Heaven, not only do they unwittingly set into motion the age of legends, but they must face an inescapable evil that threatens to destroy them, the humans they fall in love with, and the Earth itself.
Creating a new life on antediluvian Earth is no where near as simple as Fomor’s team had hoped it would be. A tragedy occurs early in their sojourn that convinces the seven that they must avoid both humans and fallen angels. But when they unexpectedly meet with the Nephilim, a tribe of unusual humans with unknown origins, the results are unprecedented. However, falling in love with humans is the least of The Unit’s problems. Mankind is busily descending into a maelstrom of violence and profane religion. The Fallen, angels transformed into demons by their rebellion, have regrouped and are using the tattered remnants of their power to prey upon humankind in horrific ways. Not only is a demon demanding human sacrifice in a nearby village, but the world is careening towards a global disaster that not even The Unit can stop.
It was a black night in the human village of Kutu. The moon hung low in the sky, hiding its face behind a stand of trees from the horror on the ground. The demon didn’t mind the dark. His distress had a different source.
Gone! Drained it dry didn’t you? And left me nothing, not even a drop! A long clawed foot flicked out to nudge the body. What small things these humans are. This one is just a juiceless sack now, nothing left for me. A selfish thing you are, Bansh. No wonder our Master wants you hunted, wants you punished for your betrayal. You followed him into battle against the Creator and then abandoned him.
The burnt, scarred head lifted to scent the air. Someone is coming. Good enough. The Eater is long gone anyway, and the Master will not mind if I profit a little from this discovery. And this one, a gnarled talon reached out to poke at the corpse again, is far past caring about anything.
From the hut nearby came the stealthy sounds of a child escaping her mother’s watchful eye.
Baby, Baby is that you? Mama will skin me if she catches me out here after bed time. Baby?” The little girl crept carefully around the corner of the mud brick house and picked her way through the low vegetation. “Come on little kitty, you don’t want to get eaten. There’s lots of eaters out at night.”
The tiny light of her candle flickered in the breeze, shedding a pool of illumination too small to give much help to her eyes. Her ears were more useful and she heard the reptilian scrabble of his claws as he scuttled up the tree into hiding. The skin under the soft blond curls tightened slightly, but she was too intent on her search to be frightened yet. She heard the soft mew of the kitten to her left, turned toward it and stumbled, her foot caught in something on the ground. She thrust her hands out to catch herself and dropped the little candle. Her hands shook in the sudden dark as she struggled to free her foot from the soft cloth it was tangled in. Above her, the thing in the tree salivated as the girl’s heart began to pound.
What is it? What is it? Her thoughts scurried frantically as the child thrust small fingers between the cloth and her ankle. The brush of cold, dead flesh against her palm dried her mouth with fear. Shivering, she struggled to her feet just as the moon poked his pale face above the houseline, throwing a sliver of light on the human wreckage in front of her. The thing in the tree cursed as her screams rang out, bringing more humans, bringing the security of numbers.
The child’s terrified screams escalated, blending with the shouts from the surrounding houses. As running feet rushed to protect, he shrank back into the dark and resigned himself to another meal of vermin blood. Even the little cat would have been better, but the girl had found it, and clutched it against her thin chest like a shield. His mouth foul with silent curses, he scuttled away, further into the dark. His hunger was another mark against the Eater, the betrayer of the Master. A grimace of pleasure stretched the lipless void of his fanged mouth as he considered the things that might happen to Bansh once he caught him, before he returned him to the Master.
Anticipation scraped through him as he circled the village, now brightly lit with torches, searching for the trail. Stupid humans, they ruin their vision with torches. Make the night darker where the light doesn’t reach.Just as well that Benat does not track by sight so much. It didn’t take him long to find the stench he sought, not five cubits outside the beacon of light that the village had become. He grimaced again, shuddered – and pursued.
